We chat with ECI’s summer intern, Jasmine Iferenta about how she found out about our intern programme, advice for future interns considering applying and what she’ll be doing when her time at ECI comes to an end.
Q: How did you find out about the ECI internship?
I discovered the ECI internship through the 10,000 Black Interns program, which offers paid internships to students and graduates across various industries in the UK. You can apply to a maximum of three sectors and I selected law and investment management. Your application is sent to participating firms in that sector, and I was contacted by ECI after they were impressed by my cover letter.
Q: Any tips for future interns considering applying?
The cover letter is only 250 words and the same one is sent to all firms in that sector, so you can’t tailor your response as you normally might. When writing your cover letter, I’d suggest concisely articulating your interest in the sectors you’re applying to, and supporting this with real-life examples, transferrable skills, and/or any other relevant experiences you’ve gained.
The subsequent process was in two stages – an interview and then a case study, and preparation is key. Get yourself comfortable with the private equity sector and ECI’s focus on mid-market companies so you can answer and ask relevant questions. For the case study, which is quite technical, it’s important to understand the mid-market context, the implications of the wider economy and to read all of the case material.
I don’t have an economics background so it took me out of my comfort zone, but don’t let that discourage you. Let your natural skills shine through.
Q: What have you been working on and what has stood out?
I’ve been able to get involved in several projects, working with the Investment, Commercial and Origination Teams. Most of the work has involved due diligence, conducting extensive research to scope customer bases, market size analysis and identifying potential opportunities. It’s given me a great perspective on private equity, and working across the three teams has broadened my understanding of their different objectives.
In my first couple of weeks I was lucky enough to work on a live deal, and it was fantastic to see how my research could influence strategic decisions. That’s definitely been the highlight so far.
Q: Is private equity what you thought it was going to be, or has anything surprised you?
Private equity is a little different to what I was expecting. I was surprised by ECI’s flat hierarchy and highly collaborative nature. I was a little apprehensive coming from a law background, but no matter the individual’s level everyone is willing to spend time with you, have a conversation, or help and provide guidance. As a result, I really feel I’ve been involved in all the areas I’ve expressed an interest in and that my input has added tangible value.
Q: You’re a law graduate, so what are you looking to do next?
Earlier this year I completed a vacation scheme at Reed Smith and was offered a training contract. So I will be going to law school to start my SQE studies before commencing my training with Reed Smith. At the moment I’m very open to what practice area I’ll qualify into, but I’m excited to leverage my experience at ECI during my corporate seat.
Quick Fire with Jasmine:
How do you relax?
I love going out with my friends, going for drinks, going for dinner. But if I really need to relieve stress I head to the gym for a free weight session. I find doing weights helps me to unwind and clear my mind.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
“Rejection is redirection” has to be the best advice I’ve received. Perseverance is essential, especially in the face of setbacks. I’ve learnt that it’s really important to keep on pushing until you achieve your desired goal and to use rejection as motivation to accomplish your objectives.
Beach or adventure holiday?
I enjoy holidays that offer a mix of relaxation and adventure, but if I had to choose, it would be a beach holiday. An all-inclusive resort, with stunning views, lots of sun and opportunities for water sports.
What’s been the song of your summer?
Favourite Girl by Darkoo ft. Dess Dior. It gives me good vibes and gets me in a great mood.
What’s your favourite film?
My favourite film is Home Alone because it captures the joy and excitement of Christmas so well. For me, it’s a timeless classic that brings back great memories and never fails to get me into the holiday spirit.
